ABOUT THE ARTISTS
DANIELA PAPADIA, THE ARTIST WHO TURNED THE HUMAN GENOME INTO A MASTERPIECE
Le Dame Art Gallery are extremely excited to announce “Human Genome – The Table of Alliance”, Daniela Papadia’s first Solo Exhibition in the UK, set from the 18th of February to the 4th of March 2016.
Daniela’s is an established Italian painter who in the last 3 years has been devoting her artistic research in the study of humanities with a scientific approach, weaving together art, science and issues of multiculturalism and solidarity.
Artist and scientists fuse together to generate new landscapes and languages. Thanks to the support from Riccardo Cassiani Ingoni and from Dr. Ph.D Gianni Soldati, CEO of the Swiss Cell Stem Foundation in Lugano, Daniela realised her dream becoming the first artist who ever mapped the genomes of all our individual blood groups – and all our shared bloodlines – together into one tactile, moving, human artefact.
The exhibition features 20 works among tapestries on embroidered linen and canvasses, each one depicting a single chromosome. During the opening on the 18th, visitors will be able to admire also Daniela’s masterpiece “The Table of Alliance”, a 12 x 2meter tapestry reproducing the entire Human Genome. Stitched together in the “Carcere Rebibbia” (a prison and correctional facility in Rome, Italy) by convicted women from different countries, it has now become a symbol for solidarity, multiculturalism and a strong tool to raise awareness against racism.
The project courageously demonstrates that, despite our differences, we all share the same genetic threads as less than 1% of our genome separates us.
The exhibition is supported by Le Dame Art Gallery, curator Sveva Manfredi Zavaglia, Anna Marra Contemporanea Gallery, Mirta d’Argenzio, curator and a VIP Relations Italy for Art Basel, in collaboration with Que Simmons, Founder Muse Art Fair, and Yvonne McCormack-Lyons, President of the “Women’s International Film & Arts Festival.
‘THE TABLE OF ALLIANCE’ DOCUMENTARY
The documentary describes the development process, from creation to execution of the Table of Alliance. Six women of different nationalities, all of them inmates in Rome’s Rebibbia Prison (Italy), embroider a 12-metre tapestry map of the human genome, the common bond for all humanity. ‘The Table of Alliance’ documents the creation and realization of Daniela’s project, with the support from the Italian President of the Republic and obtained the “Medal of Representation”. It has also been benefited from the generous patronage of: The Italian Ministry of Culture, The Italian Ministry of Justice, Rome – Department of Culture, Creativity and Artistic Promotion, Pontificium Consilium Pro Familia. In 2015, the documentary was shortlisted at the “Peace on Earth Film Festival” in Chicago and the “Women’s International Film & Arts Festival” in Miami.
