Monumental: Here and Now

Henry Bermudez

Henry Bermúdez (b. Maracaibo, 1951) is one of Venezuela’s most relevant contemporary artists, and has been a resident of the City of Philadelphia since 2004/for the past eight years. The following has been written about his life and work:

During his early years he was inspired by mythology, creating a series of minotaurs and centaurs that were picked up once more by the artist in later works. He also developed the “Cherubs”, a term that was coined by the Venezuelan critics of the time in order to define a series of small nude masculine characters. However, during the 1970’s he worked with great intensity on ink drawings on paper. Trees, anthropomorphic figures, and birds, were constants in these meticulous creations woven in the manner of arabesques, the fruit of his experience as an art professor in Bobures de la Costa, to the south of Lake Maracaibo, a landscape that notoriously influenced his plastic expression. Added to this, the beliefs in Saint Benito, and the culture and Afro-folklore of Bobures, generated new ideas in his drawings, removed from religious themes (…) Between 1977 and 1979 he lived in Mexico, where he studied the Aztec civilization and Mexican arts and crafts. From a thematic point of view this was reflected in the vigorous reaparition of the religious and, on a formal plastic level, with the presence of graphics and warsm tonalities (Biographic Dictionary of the Visual Arts in Venezuela, Fundación Galería de Arte Nacional, Caracas, 2005).

The previous entry manifests three fundamental aspects of this artist’s creation that deserve to be emphasized. These are: identity, baroqueness, and religiosity.

Jose Antonio Zarate

· Nace en La Orotava, Tenerife, en 1954
· Estudia Bellas Artes en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y realiza la Licenciatura en San Jorge, Barcelona en 1982
· En verano de 1981 participa en el curso de Pintura Mural Contemporánea Miguel Ferré en San Cugat del Vallés, Barcelona
· Estudia las técnicas del grabado en el taller de la Casa de Colón de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria desde 1983
· En 1985 participa en el primer Taller de Arte Actual de Las Palmas, dirigido por Lucio Muñoz
· Profesor de la asignatura Análisis de Formas los cursos 83-84 y 84-85 en la Facultad de Las Palmas
